Ambassador Markus Lacanilao has been placed under Senate custody after having been cited in contempt during the legislative hearings on the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Senate Spokesperson Arnel Jose Banas said the special envoy on transnational crime was placed under Senate custody on Monday (April 21) based on the order issued by Senate President Francis Escudero. The spokesperson noted “Ambassador Lacanilao went through standard procedure and was checked by the Medical and Dental Bureau.” Banas noted Lacanilao will be placed under Senate custody not exceeding two days. “Pursuant to the requirements of due process, the Senate President issued a Show Cause Order directing Ambassador Lacanilao to explain why he should not be ordered arrested and detained,” he said. “After careful evaluation, the Senate President ordered Ambassador Lacanilao placed under Senate custody, after having failed to satisfactorily explain, through a clear statement of facts, why his answers during the hearing were not evasive,” said the spokesperson.
